Designing Dialogue Delivering Impact
We help organisations make consequential environmental decisions when trust is low, reactions are challenging, and the cost of getting it wrong is too high
A story about how it all started
Once upon a windy stretch of Kent coastline...
For years, people had been arguing about what the coast was for. Wildlife or work? Birds or jobs? Protection or progress? Everyone had a point. No one was giving way. After two decades, trust was running low, positions were hardening, and legal action was looming.
Then Diana had an idea: what if the people who cared about the coast could figure it out together?
She challenged the status quo and invited people into something unfamiliar: consensus building. It meant doing things differently. Bringing people in properly. Designing the process, not just the meeting. Letting go of the idea that one side had to win.
More than 100 people took part. It wasn't easy. But slowly, something shifted. People started listening. New ideas emerged. The conversation became less about opposing positions and more about understanding the bigger picture. Eventually, the story changed.
No court case. No winners or losers. Just a hard-earned agreement, new partnerships, and a coastline managed by many voices, not one. That partnership is still going strong 25 years later. For us, that's where it all began.
It shaped a belief that's guided us ever since: when trust is low and stakes are high, the answer isn't louder voices, it's better listening and better design. Bring people into decisions with purpose, and even the toughest conflicts can become shared progress. That's why Dialogue Matters.
Because sometimes the bravest thing you can do is sit down together and try something different. And sometimes, that's enough to change the story.

What makes us distinctive
We say what others won’t
Genuine participation means people have the opportunity to influence outcomes. If a workshop or meeting cannot affect a decision, we do not 'co-wash'. We believe in being honest with stakeholders and clients from the start. That sets us apart.
We have been there
150+ processes, in the UK, the home nations and overseas, for more than 25 years. We are not surprised by complexity. Dialogue Matters' experience creates real value, for everyone involved.
We work on the decision, not just the conversation around it
Most engagement professionals design processes and events. We look for win/win outcomes - and then design the process that makes those outcomes possible
We know what failure looks like
Many of the situations that come to us are situations where something has already started to go wrong. Recognising the early signs of breakdown - and knowing what to do about it - is a core pillar of Dialogue Matters' methodology.
